Un inquadramento generale della storia dell'arte del Mediterraneo medievale offrirà l'opportunità di acquisire familiarità con interscambi e collegamenti culturali e artistici tra l’Occidente latino, l’impero bizantino e il mondo islamico. Gli studenti saranno inoltre dotati di informazioni di base sui principali materiali e sulle tecniche impiegate nelle arti decorative e nell’ornamento del medioevo.
La selezione di testi e articoli accademici offrirà una prospettiva critica e storiografica, dotando gli studenti di un approccio metodologico nella ricerca storico artistica e di una consapevolezza di base su categorie formali e culturali quali figurativo e aniconico, mimesi e astrazione, tradizione e innovazione, scambi transculturali, centri e periferie, centralità e marginalità.

Programma
Il corso intende fornire agli studenti un inquadramento di carattere generale sulle arti visive e l’ornamento nel bacino del Mediterraneo in età medievale, ripercorrendo le principali tappe della storiografia sul tema.L’esame di casi-studio selezionati (Santa Sofia di Costantinopoli e la Cupola della Roccia a Gerusalemme, San Vitale a Ravenna e la Grande Moschea di Cordova, la Cappella Palatina di Palermo e San Lorenzo f.l.m. a Roma), consentirà di approfondire le relazioni transculturali tra Oriente e Occidente nei secoli VI - XIII nei diversi linguaggi visivi, ornamentali ed estetici
