Established in accordance with the requirements and guidelines of MIUR Decree no. 45 of 8 February 2013 (National Regulation for the Accreditation of PhD Programs), the PhD program currently represents the Department of Humanities’ most advanced training framework, in which high-level interdisciplinary research is carried out.

As for the first curriculum, the areas of specialization include:

Greek, Latin philology and literature of the classical and medieval periods, ancient Christian literature, ancient history, related auxiliary disciplines, the manuscript transmission of texts, the Fortleben of classical culture and tradition.

As for the second curriculum, the areas of specialization include:

Italian literature from its origins to the modern and contemporary age, Italian linguistics, Italian philology, the history of literary criticism and methodologies, comparative literature.

Research activities are complemented by an intensive program of seminars held by highly qualified scholars from Italian and foreign universities, as well as lecture cycles taught by members of the Academic Board, aimed at acquiring advanced research methodologies and lines of inquiry related to the disciplinary fields of the PhD.

The course includes specific training days dedicated to the use of digital databases, in collaboration with the DHLab, the laboratory hub for Digital Humanities of the Department of Humanities at Roma Tre University.

The Academic Board encourages periods of study abroad for PhD students—aimed at developing their research projects or linked to teaching experiences—by providing the necessary funding and by making use of and establishing exchange and co-supervision agreements with leading foreign universities.

For the 40th cycle (1 December 2024 – 30 November 2027), the PhD program has issued calls for six (6) scholarships, three for each curriculum. Of these, five (5) were funded by Roma Tre University and one (1) by the 2023–2027 Departmental Excellence Project of the Department of Humanities. No unfunded phD positions have been provided.
