The aim of the course is to provide the essential elements of the analysis of Third Sector Entities, which encompasses a variety of actors, individuals, entities, organizations, and businesses pursuing civic, solidarity, and socially beneficial goals and carrying out activities of general interest. This analysis is then applied to the development of local social services systems.
Upon completion of the course, students will be able to:
In terms of knowledge and understanding:
- understand the various social science theories and approaches regarding the emergence, presence, evolution, and development prospects of organizations;
- understand the main international definitions (with particular attention to the European context);
In terms of independent judgment:
- relate sociological theory to Third Sector organizations;
- evaluate innovations in the social intervention system.
In terms of communication skills:
- apply the "case study" technique to the Third Sector;
In terms of learning skills:
- critically compare different approaches to studying the Third Sector and discuss their implications for public policy;
- exercise a willingness to engage in scientific research in the Third Sector.
The course connects and complements the Course in Sociological and Legal Outlines of the Welfare System, to which it will refer with the aim of developing a specific path of analysis of the Third Sector within the development of the social welfare system. For MAPSS students in particular, the course will broaden their knowledge of the political and social dynamics of the development of innovative practices in the local social services system.

Programma
After an initial presentation of the main analytical paradigms for interpreting the NGO Sector, the main approaches developed within three traditions of reflexive thought will be illustrated: a) economic theories; b) political theories; c) sociological theories. The second part will address the question of how the NGO Sector functions in Italy, and thus what are the operational and management characteristics that determine its specificity/distinctiveness. A specific part will deal with the professional profiles of NGO professionals. Finally, specific areas of development of the NGO sector in Italy will be analysed.Testi Adottati
