Programma

"Memory culture and national identity in German-language literature"

This seminar focuses on the question of how German-language literature shapes and reflects collective memory and contributes to the construction or questioning of national identity. Literary texts will be placed in relation to concepts of cultural studies and memory theory.
After an introductory discussion of literature as a medium of remembrance, we will focus on various thematic areas: the examination of the Holocaust, family memory as a private form of remembrance, post-reunification literature and the memory of a divided Germany, as well as migration-related and transnational memory culture.
