Programma

The final exam requires a detailed knowledge of Axel Honneth's book "Freedom's Right. The Social Foundations of Democratic Life" and of the content of two articles (available in open access) concerned with the historical roots and problematic aspects of the so-called "hate speech".

1) Methodological approach: a theory of justice as an analysis of society

2) Historical-conceptual reconstruction of negative liberty

3) Historical-conceptual reconstruction of reflexive liberty

4) Social liberty and ethics

5) Developments of the democratic ethos

6) The reasons for the existence, the limitations and the social pathologies of legal liberty

7) The reasons for the existence, the limitations and the social pathologies of moral liberty

8) The enjoyment of fundamental rights in the private sphere

9) The enjoyment of fundamental rights in the economic sphere

10) The enjoyment of fundamental rights in the public democratic domain

11) Historical reconstruction of the basic features of the so called Hate Speech

12) Critical analysis of Hate Speech as a category

Although not strictly mandatory, class attendance is recommended to gain familiarity with the analytical-conceptual aspects that characterize the course.

Modalità Valutazione

The evaluation of both attending and non-attending students follows the canonical series of questions and answers inspired by the so-called Socratic Method. In particular, the evaluation will take into consideration 1) the descriptive and defining ability of the candidates and 2) the argumentative and meta-critical ability of the candidates.
