The course includes:
(1) An introduction to the Hellenistic world, with particular focus on the Greek poleis of the period.
(2) An examination of their political institutions—in their aspects of continuity and evolution—their relationship with monarchs, the role of the elite, and the intense network of interactions among the cities, expressed through diplomatic relations, exchanges of honours and judges, recognitions of syngeneia and asylia, and shared participation in cults. The topics will be approached through the evidence of literary, epigraphic, archaeological, and iconographic sources. Students will also be introduced to the main databases of Greek literary texts and inscriptions, as well as to the principal bibliographical research tools.

In order to sit the exam, students must submit a short written paper on a topic related to those covered in the lectures, which has been agreed with the teacher. This paper should be submitted to the teacher seven days before the exam and will form part of the exam, together with an assessment of the preparation of the institutional part. The oral examination will include questions on the texts indicated in the bibliography and on the topics discussed in class. Students will be tested on their ability to competently and clearly illustrate the methodologies applied to the analysis of the texts examined during the lectures or studied independently.
