The course aims to provide students with elements of Classical Philology and the most important research tools for critical studies of Classics. The student will acquire basic knowledge of history of philology, textual criticism and tradition of Greek and Latin classical texts.

Description of the course: The course aims to provide students with elements of Classical Philology and a basic knowledge of history of tradition and textual criticism of Greek and Latin authors.
The program involves practices of composition, publication and divulgation of the ancient book (I), as well as transmission processes and critical editing procedures of Classics (II). The acquired abilities concerning manuscript tradition, constitutio textus and critical apparatus will be measured on critical editions of Greek and Latin authors (III).
The knowledge of the Latin and Greek languages is necessary.

6 cfu, 4 hours every week, ca 10 weeks Semester II Part I: frontal lessons with reading and commenting on passages of Greek and Latin testimonies concerning composition, publication and tradition of ancient texts; part II: frontal lessons on the history of classical philology and the ecdotic methods applied to the edition of the classics; part III: case studies relating to authors representative of the Greek and Latin literatures, transmitted by direct tradition, with particular attention to manuscript tradition, stemmatic reconstruction and constitution of the text. The textual material will be provided as a photocopy to the students and will also be downloadable from the teacher's internet page.Modalità Frequenza
The course requires the active participation of the students. Students unable to attend the lessons will replace the lessons with the texts indicated in the bibliography. It is advisable to contact the teacher.Modalità Valutazione
Oral exam The exam will start from the reading and commentary on some of the texts examined during the lessons; subsequently the discussion will extend to more general aspects linked to the covered topics. The student must demonstrate the acquired linguistic, metric and philological competences. The evaluation will take into account the following elements: metric reading and translation of the text, classification in the historical-literary context, philological analysis and interpretation of critical apparatus and knowledge of the manuscript tradition, intra-textual and inter-textual links.
